当奥氏体的冷却速度大于vk并过冷到Ms以下时，就开始发生马氏体转变。由于马氏体转变温度极低，过冷度很大，而且形成的速度极快，使奥氏体向马氏体的转变只发生γ-Fe→α-Fe的晶格改组，而没有铁、碳原子的扩散，所以马氏体的碳质量分数就是转变前奥氏体的碳质量分数。由于α-Fe中最大溶碳量为0.0218%，所以马氏体是碳在α-Fe中的过饱和间隙固溶体。马氏体是以德国冶金学家A.Martens的名字命名的。
