颤藻属于颤藻科，最原始的绿色植物之一，是丝状的蓝线菌，属于原核生物。表面有黏液鞘，在显微镜底下可以看见细薄的丝状构造，藻体内分泌的胶状物质把丝质在水作媒体的作用下推动， 在水面作有韵律的颤动， 故名。是分布最广，种类最多的蓝藻菌，其生命力极强。颤藻生长不受季节变化的影响，一年四季都可以采到。 颤藻细胞直径比细菌大，甚至可以达到70μm。
