韧带连接骨与骨，为明显的纤维组织，或附于骨的表面或与关节囊的外层融合，以加强关节的稳固性，以免损伤。当遭受暴力，产生非生理性活动，韧带被牵拉而超过其耐受力时，即会发生损伤。韧带部分损伤而未造成关节脱位趋势者称为捩伤。韧带本身完全断裂，也可将其附着部位的骨质撕脱，从而形成潜在的关节脱位、半脱位乃至完全脱位。
