锰结核又称多金属结核、锰矿球、锰矿团、锰瘤等，它是一种铁、锰氧化物的集合体，颜色常为黑色和褐黑色。锰结核的形态多样，有球状、椭圆状、马铃薯状、葡萄状、扁平状、炉渣状等。锰结核的大小尺寸变化也比较悬殊，从几微米到几十厘米的都有，重量最大的有几十公斤。
