铁水炉外脱硫是指铁水进入炼钢炉前，在炉外进行脱硫处理的一种预处理工艺，以降低生铁的含硫量，提高钢的质量，改善钢铁厂的综合技术经济指标。铁水的炉外脱硫，早期仅作为处理高硫铁水的一种手段。近年来，一方面对钢的含硫量的要求日趋严格，另一方面又要求适当放宽高炉生产的铁水含硫量,以提高高炉产量，降低焦比，从而降低钢铁综合成本。因此炉外脱硫工艺得到迅速发展。常用的脱硫剂有石灰、电石、纯碱、镁粉等。
