金藻亦称金褐藻(golden-brown algae)，金褐色，除含叶绿素外，尚合有较多的类胡萝卜素。单细胞游动的种类，无细胞壁，有细胞壁的种类，其组成物质主要为果胶。多具一或二根顶生的鞭毛(三根的少见)，鞭毛等长或不等长。贮藏食物为油类和麦白蛋白。繁殖方法有断裂(群体种类)、分裂、产生游动孢子(无鞭毛的种类)；有性生殖少见，属同配接合。主要分布在温度较低的清澈淡水中。
对 小新月菱形藻（Nitzschia closterium f．minutissima）和等鞭金藻（Isochrysis galbana Parke）的研究发现，低光照强度下两种微藻的脂肪含量多而高光照强度则相反。 在对其它饵料微藻的研究中也得到了相似的结果。
