两河流域，地中海沿岸和埃及是世界上最早发明冶炼铸铁的地区。我国考古工作者曾发现公元前五世纪的铁器，但数量不很多；另外，还发现公元前三、四世纪的铁器，数量较多，而且冶铸水平较高。如1950年，我国考古工作者曾在河南辉县固围村发掘战国时代的魏墓，发现铁制生产工具九十多件，其中有铁犁、铁锄、铁镰刀、铁斧、铁链等。从这些实物可以推断，我国劳动人民早在近三千年前的周代，已会冶炼铸铁了。到了公元前三、四世纪，我国铁器的使用便普遍起来。这说明我国使用铸铁的时间要比欧洲早出一千六百年，是我国古代劳动人民对世界冶金技术的伟大贡献。
