重大过失，又称“重过失”、“严重过失”过失的一种形式。是指当法律对某种行为人于某种情况下应当注意和能够注意的程度有较高要求时，行为人不但没有遵守法律对其较高的要求，甚至连人们都应注意并能注意的一般标准也未达到的过失状态。对于重大过失，当事人一般不得事先约定免除责任。但在损害的发生系由受害人的重大过失所引起而致害人只有一般过失时，则可免除致害人的赔偿责任。
