运动单位为位于脊髓前角的alpha运动神经元及其所支配的骨骼肌纤维所构成的结构。它是肌肉运动的机能单位。每块肌肉都有一定数量的运动单位。一般一个运动神经元支配100根或更多的肌纤维。当100根肌纤维中一根肌纤维收缩时，所有100根肌纤维都收缩，并且收缩至最大限度。在准确性要求高的部位，如眼外直肌，一个神经元仅管理12根肌纤维；在力量性要求高的部位，如大腿肌，一个神经元要管理2000根肌纤维。
