造纸是古代中国劳动人民的重要发明。分有机制和手工两种形式。机制是在造纸机上连续进行，将适合于纸张质量的纸浆，用水稀释至一定浓度，在造纸机的网部初步脱水，形成湿的纸页，再经压榨脱水，然后烘干成纸。 手工则用有竹帘、聚酯网或铜网的框架，将分散悬浮于水中的纤维抄成湿纸页，经压榨脱水，再行晒干或烘干成纸。机制和手工两种造出来的纸最大区别在于，由于手工纸采用人工打浆，纸浆中的纤维保存完好；机制纸采用机器打浆，纸浆纤维被打碎。使得手工纸在韧性拉力上大大优于机制纸。机制纸存在浆网速差导致纤维纵横向分布不均，手工纸不存在纤维纵横向分布比例不均，特别体现在书画用纸上（比如：宣纸）。
