递阶系统是大系统常见的一种形式，又称多级系统或多级递阶系统。递阶系统及其控制理论是本世纪60年代以后发展起来的。递阶系统一般是两级，也可为三四级，甚至多级。递阶系统需要多级递阶控制，这种递阶控制是集中控制和分散控制两种方式的结合。其基本思想是：将整体控制分解为若干子问题，每个子问题根据其目的设控制器(或控制机构)。若干子控制服务于控制中心(即第一级控制)，子控制(第二级控制)又直接作用于第三级(被控对象)。或类似至若干级，构成递阶控制系统。控制中心根据总目标通过各级子控制获得信息并作出决策，指挥整个系统的协调运行。各级之间，信息只在相邻上下级垂直传递，自上而下的信息有优先权。递阶系统的控制有三种基本形式：(一)多级递阶结构控制。递阶的划分是根据被控对象或过程的结构特征，将递阶系统分为阶区子系统与子控制。(二)多层递阶结构控制。多阶控制侧重于多级关系控制，多层控制重于多层关系控制。(三)多段递阶结构控制。是根据被控对象的过程顺序侧重于分段控制。
