透平是英文turbine的音译，源于拉丁文turbo一词，意为旋转物体。透平机是将流体介质中蕴有的能量与机械能相互转换的机器。不仅是压缩机，汽轮机、涡轮机、烟气轮机、膨胀机都可以叫透平机。 透平机的工质可以是气体，也可以是液体。以水为工质的叫水轮机，以蒸汽为工质的叫汽轮机，以燃气为工质的叫燃气机也就是燃气透平。
