适应度，是指在某种环境条件下，某已知基因型的个体将其基因传递到其后代基因库中的相对能力，是衡量个体存活和生殖机会的尺度。 虽然生存是繁殖的前提，但不能繁殖的生存对进化来说是无意义的，因而繁殖(基因延续)是更本质的。现代综合论在修正达尔文学说和重新解释自然选择原理时，以“繁殖”代替“生存”，用来衡量适应，“最适者生存”变为“最适者繁殖”(Mayr，1977)，并且用适应度(fitness)这个新概念来定量地表示适应的程度。
