运笔即用手腕运转毛笔，要学会运笔，应弄清楚指，腕，臂各个部位的作用及其相互关系。一般来说，指的作用在于执笔，腕臂的作用在于运笔。在书写字径3厘米以下的小字时，点画间距较小，动作细微，就用五指协调行笔。如书写拳头般大小的字体，由于运笔范围大，而以用腕为主要，指则辅助之。在大些的字，仅靠腕无济于事，须要用臂来配合腕共同完成书写。
