在地下水位以下或水下有水压力作用在混凝土结构面上的部位称为迎水面。如：水箱的内墙面，内底面。地下室地下水位以下与土体接触的外墙面，底板底面，需要覆土或位于室外的地下室顶板面。 通俗地说，（有水的那一面就算迎水面）水流从一面向另一面有渗透的趋势。这个第一面，即迎水面。如地下室的外墙，当地下水从外面向里面有渗透的趋势时，外面即迎水面。 如水箱，里面的水有向外渗透的趋势，里面即为迎水面。如地下一水箱。地下水有从外向水箱内渗透的趋势，而水箱内的水也有向外渗透的趋势，则两个面都是迎水面。
在潮湿基面上施工，迎水面和背水面均可施工。
