辅光是补充光照射不到的被摄物其他面的光种，以弥补照度的不足，起辅助作用，须配合主光使用，所以又被称为副光。一般用辅光来平衡被摄物明暗两面的亮度差，体现阴影不分的更多细节，调节画面的光比（照明反差）。 辅光的主要作用是提高主光所产生阴影部位的亮度，使阴暗部位也呈现出一定的质感和层次，同时减小影像反差。在辅光的运用上，有一点应明确，辅光的强度应小于主光的强度，否则，就会造成喧宾夺主的效果，并且容易在被摄体上出现明显的辅光投影，即“夹光”现象。
