圆筒形容器，当其承受内压力P作用以后，其走势要稍微增大，帮筒壁内的“环向纤维”要伸长，因此在筒体纵向的横截面上必定有应力产生，此应力称为环向应力，以δθ表示．由于筒壁很薄，可以认为环向应力沿壁厚均匀分布．鉴于窗口两端是封闭的，在承受内压后，筒体的“纵向纤维”也要伸长，则筒体横向截面线也必定有应力产生，此应力称为轴向应力，以δm表示。对于薄壁容器，筒壁内作任一点均存在这两向力，可以利用材料力学的截面法，由静力平衡议程求得。s为薄壁容器厚度，D为薄壁容器内径。
