建筑物某楼层的上部与下部因平面使用功能不同，该楼层上部与下部采用不同结构（设备）类型，并通过该楼层进行结构（设备）转换，则该楼层称为结构（设备）转换层。高层建筑多为低层商用，上部住宿的多功能要求，在低层商用要求的大空间与上部住宿要求的多墙多柱的小空间之间，往往需要采用一定的结构形式进行转换处理，即加设转换层。转换层常用的结构形式包括梁式、空腹桁架式、斜杆桁架式、箱形和板式。另在房屋设计中如上下两层平面功能不同，亦对楼板墙体等进行结构加强，做转换处理。
