火电厂超超临界机组和超临界机组指的是锅炉内工质的参数达到或超过临界压力以上的机组。锅炉内的工质都是水，水的临界压力是22.129MPa,临界温度是374.15℃ ；在这个压力和温度时，因高温膨胀的水和因高压压缩的水蒸汽的密度是相同的，就叫水的临界点，炉内工质压力低于这个压力就叫亚临界锅炉，大于这个压力就是超临界锅炉，炉内蒸汽温度不低于593℃或蒸汽压力不低于31 MPa被称为超超临界。在工程上也常常将25MPa以上的称为超超临界。
而当机组的工作压力大于水的临界点压力 时，我们就称之为超临界机组(Supercritical unit)。对于超临界机 组来说，当工质被加热到某一温度后就立即全部汽化，不存在上述的汽 化分离的过程，因此超临界锅炉均为直流炉。
