自汉魏以来，重阳（九月初九）有登山、佩茱萸、饮菊花酒之俗。晋代诗人陶渊明尤爱菊花。至唐宋时，重阳赏菊成为风俗。宋代，菊之名种培植繁多，盛况逾越前代，成为当时城市居民的一大活动。明、清继之，有堆菊花山等项目，实际即是菊花品种展览，其名目多至千种。北京、苏州等地皆达到相当大的规模。
在晋代，有在这一天赏菊花和喝酒的习俗。
