语言功能是语言在实现人的具体目的中所起的作用。一般地说，语言有三种基本功能：（1）从人与文化的关系看，语言是文化信息的载体，是人类保存、传递、领会人类社会历史经验和科学、文化、艺术成就的手段；（2）从人与世界的关系看，语言是人认识世界的工具，人们既用语言进行思维，又用语言调节行为；（3）从人与人的关系看，语言是交际方式和交流思想的手段。心理学家哈利迪认为，可把儿童习得语言的过程视为逐步掌握语言的各种功能的过程。他相应地提出了七种语言功能：工具功能、调节功能、相互作用（交往）功能、个人表现功能、启发功能、想象功能和信息功能。
