道教认为识神是人认识世界和操控身体行动的意识体，它属于后天的意识。《太乙金华宗旨》中记载识神是依靠魄而存在的，是一个有形的凡心，它作为整个身体的主要核心，饥饿、困倦、乃至生气、厌烦、悲伤等，都是由识神感受到这些负面的情绪。在与外界的直接接触中，识神也建立起分辨自我与外界不同的认知，由此也有识神对应的产生出欲望，并转换为动力，促使人作出对自己有利的行为。
