凡能疏肌解表、促使发汗，用以发散表邪、解除表证的药物，称为解表药，或发表药。根据解表药的药性和主治差异，一般将其分为发散风寒药和发散风热药两类，又称辛温解表药与辛凉解表药。发散风寒药多属辛温，故又名辛温解表药，适用于风寒表证，代表药物有麻黄、桂枝、荆芥、防风等；发散风热药多属辛凉，故又名辛凉解表药，适用于风热表证，代表药物有柴胡、葛根、牛蒡子、薄荷、菊花等。
