视色素是以一种生色团（hnomogen)作为辅基的色素蛋白，或者说是由生色团和视蛋白(opsin)两部分组成。由于生理学上所测得的光谱敏感度曲线是与光感受器内光敏色素（视色素）的吸收光谱一致，因此认为视色素是感受光的最初的物质基础。
实际上，绝大部分昆虫都是色盲，它们的视觉系统仅存在两类视色素（visual pigments），黄绿视色素和蓝光紫外光视色素，即仅识别黄、绿光和蓝、紫外光，换言之，大部分昆虫都是红色色盲。
