表面物理学是20世纪60年代以后固体物理学中的一个重要而且发展极为迅速的领域。表面物理学是固体表面附近的几个原子层内具有许多异于体内的对称性质。表面物理学研究在超高真空下（10～10Torr），这几个原子层内原子的排列情况、电子状态、吸附在表面上的外来原子或分子以及在表面几个原子层内的外来杂质的电子状态和其他物理性质。实验上是通过电子束、离子束、原子束、光子、热、电场和磁场等与表面的相互作用而得到有关表面结构、表面电子态、吸附物的品种、结合的类型和成键的取向等信息。
