血吸虫全部寄生生活，多数营内寄生，少数营外寄生。雌雄异体的血吸虫，呈合抱状态寄生于哺乳动物的静脉血管中。生活史过程中有成虫、虫卵、毛蚴、母胞蚴、子胞蚴、尾蚴与童虫7个发育阶段。其中，尾蚴为感染阶段；尾蚴、童虫、成虫、虫卵均可致病，但虫卵是最主要的致病阶段，其沉积在肝、肠或膀胱及生殖器官导致的虫卵肉芽肿及其纤维化是血吸虫病最主要的病变。从粪或尿及肠组织中检获到虫卵即可确诊。治疗药物为吡喹酮。寄生人体的6种血吸虫中，埃及血吸虫、曼氏血吸虫与日本血吸虫的分布面广、危害严重，我国仅有日本血吸虫，钉螺是其唯一的中间宿主，分布于长江流域及其以南的12个省、市、自治区，采取的是以传染源控制为主的综合防治策略。
