虚字（empty word） 没有很实在意义的字,其中一部分相当于现代的虚词。亦称“虚字眼儿”，张炎《词源》卷下有《虚字》一条，他说：“词与诗不同。词之句语，有二字、三字、四字至六字、七八字者，若堆叠实字，读且不通，况付之雪儿乎？合用虚字呼唤*。单字如‘正’、‘但’、‘甚’‘任’之类。两字如‘莫是’还有’、‘那堪’之类。三字如‘更能消’、‘最无端’、‘又却是’之类。此等虚字却要用之得其所。若能善用虚字，句语自活，必不质实，观者无掩卷之诮。”
