蓝藻是藻类生物，又叫蓝绿藻；大多数蓝藻的细胞壁外面有胶质衣，因此又叫枯藻。在所有藻类生物中，蓝藻是最简单、最原始的一种。大约距今35一33亿年前，蓝藻就已经出现在地球上。现在已知蓝藻约2000种，中国已有记录的约900种。分布十分广泛，遍及世界各地，但大多数(约85%)淡水产，少数海产；有些蓝藻可生活在60一85℃的温泉中；有些种类和菌、苔藓、蕨类和裸子植物共生；有些还可穿入钙质岩石或介壳中（如穿钙藻类）或土壤深层中（如土壤蓝藻）。
