菱锰矿是碳酸盐矿物,它常含有铁、钙,锌等元素。并且这些元素往往会取代了锰。因此,纯菱锰矿很少见。菱锰矿也是生产铁锰合金的锰的来源。它们通常为粒状、块状或肾状,红色,氧化后表面呈褐黑色。具有玻璃光泽。晶粒大、透明色美者可作宝石。颗粒细小、半透明的集合体则可作玉雕材料。
