色基是冰染染料的重氨部分，又称显色剂。多数为不含可溶性基团的芳胺化合物或氨基偶氮化合物。根据不同色基与色酚偶合得到不同颜色染料，可将色基以颜色命名。常见品种有：黄色基、红色基、蓝色基、棕色基。以上色基使用时必须先行重氮化才能偶合显色，为了省去这样的操作。而将色基在染料厂就制成稳定的重氮盐，使用时只需将其活化就可参加偶合而显色，这样稳定的重氮盐简称为色盐。
