致癌作用 (carcinogenesis)是指化学致癌物引发动物和人类恶性肿瘤，增加肿瘤发病率和死亡率的过程。其机理较复杂，尚未彻底阐明。一般认为系致癌物使正常体细胞遗传物质DNA的结构和功能发生改变，引起基因突变；或不改变DNA结构，但使基因调控失常，体细胞失去分化能力所致。根据作用方式，致癌物分为直接致癌物（终致癌物）、前致癌物、协同致癌物和促癌物等。
