自净是指一定范围内，环境能够通过自然作用使特定环境中污染物的含量降低的能力，这种能力包括物理的、化学的、生物的或者是综合的。自净能力可以是污染物的迁移、转化或是污染物自身的衰减，自净能力的大小决定于环境要素的种类及其所具有的状态。水体、大气、土壤和生物等各环境要素对污染物都具有一定的自净能力。 环境容量确定的主要根据是自净能力，自净能力越强则环境容量越大，因此自净能力的研究也是区域环境规划的重要内容，可以为区习既济发展规划的决策提出依据。
