自养生物（autotroph）作为生态学用词也称独立营养生物，它的对应词为异养生物。靠无机营养生活和繁殖的生物，是有机营养生物的对应词。由呼吸等的化学暗反应，或由光化学反应所获得的能量用于碳素同化的生物，分别称为化能自养生物（chemoautotroph）和光能自养生物（photoautotroph）。以无机物为营养和可自行制造有机物供自身生长需要的生物。包括多数绿色植物和化学合成细菌，它们是生态系统中有机物的生产者，是生态系统中食物链的基础。
