腺垂体是体内最重要的内分泌腺，是脑基底部靠近视丘下部的樱桃状的一个器官，属于内分泌系统的一部分。他分泌的多种激素可以刺激视丘下部激素的分泌。已知腺垂体分泌的激素有七种：生长激素（HGH）、催乳素（PRL）、促黑素（MSH）、 促甲状腺激素(TSH)， 促肾上腺皮质激素(ACTH)， 促性腺激素（GTH（包括FSH和LH））。TSH作用在甲状腺，ACTH作用在肾上腺皮质，GTH作用在男、女性腺（睾丸和卵巢）。
