腭裂较为常见，可单独发生，也可并发唇裂。腭裂不仅有软组织畸形，大部分腭裂患者还可伴有不同程度的骨组织缺损和畸形，在吮吸，进食及语言等生理功能障碍方面远比唇裂严重。由于颌骨生长发育障碍还常导致面中部塌陷，严重者呈碟形脸，咬合错乱（常呈反颌或开颌）。因此，腭裂畸形造成的多种生理功能障碍，特别是语言功能障碍和牙错乱，对患者的日常生活、学习、工作均带来不利影响，也容易造成患者的心理障碍。
