胶体颗粒（colloidal particle）粒径小于10μm的颗粒，水体中胶体颗粒大小通常为1～100 nm，它们的重力沉速低于10-2cm/s，故在水中经常保持相对稳定的悬浮态，不能直接用沉降或过滤的方法从水中去除。一般有亲水胶体和憎水胶体两类。前者在颗粒和水之间有强烈亲和力，如动物胶、淀粉、树胶、蛋白质等，后者颗粒和水之间的亲合力可忽略不计，如金溶胶、非水合金属氧化物等。自然水体系中的胶体颗粒有黏土、二氧化硅、碳酸钙、细菌和病毒等。
