胞间层(intercellular layer) 又称为中层(middle lamella),是细胞壁的最外层,位于两细胞之间,是细胞分裂时,由相邻的两个细胞向外分泌的果胶(pectin) 构成的。果胶是多糖类物质,黏而柔软,能将相邻的细胞彼此粘连在一起,同时又有一定的可塑性,能缓冲细胞间的挤压又不致阻碍细胞扩大表面积。果胶易于被酶或酸、碱溶液溶解,从而引起胞间层以及细胞的相互分离。西瓜、番茄、苹果等果实成熟时,产生果胶酶,将果肉细胞的胞间层溶解,细胞彼此分离,使果实变软。
无论是云杉或是桦木,细胞角处的胞间层或次生壁的木素都极易和氯反应。
