古代植物在古气候、古地理和古构造等有利条件下,聚集而形成煤矿床(最初为泥炭)的作用。 强烈的地壳活动使有利聚煤沼泽的环境不易长期保持,过于缓慢的地壳活动又因堆积的植物遗体暴露在水面以上,受风化而被破坏掉。因此只有地壳的沉降速度与植物遗体堆积长期保持平衡的情况下,植物遗体才能够大量堆积并保存下来,形成一定厚度的泥炭层。
