在汉语中，有一种词叫联绵词。指两个音节连缀成义而不能拆开的词。联绵词是一个古老而又常新的词类，上到经书传书，下到现当代作品，联绵词都很活跃。而中学生又常在联绵词上犯一些错误，所以在语文教学中就很有必要帮助学生拓宽对联绵词的再认识。
然而，这还导致了亨里克斯翻译中如下一种类型的欠缺，即强制性地将联绵词（polysyllabic words）的每个音节割裂开来翻译。不加夸张地说，这样误译的例子有数以百计，散布于这个译本的书页之间。
