缅族是缅甸最大的民族，人口约3318万（1997年），占缅甸总人口的71.5%。主要居住在伊落瓦底江中下游和伊落瓦底江三角洲一带，即人们所称的“缅甸本部”。缅族居住区物产丰富，水草丰茂，伊落瓦底江三角洲是缅甸有名的“鱼米之乡”，盛产稻米，水稻产量占缅甸水稻总产量的三分之二，被誉为“缅甸粮仓”。
