维管束鞘指部分或全部包围在维管束周围的单层至多层细胞构成的机械组织。在草本植物，特别是单子叶植物茎很发达。被子植物的叶，叶脉维管束发达，双子叶植物中栎树（Quercus spp．）、苹果（Malus pumila）等，单子叶植物中禾本科（Gramineae）的维管束，是由相当大形的薄壁或厚壁的薄壁细胞构成，一般具叶绿体，不仅能输导，也可进行暂时性光合作用，当叶绿体消失后就不再具有这些功能；因为是多层细胞构成的机械组织，所以能起到一定支撑作用。
