学名为铂(platinum)，又称纯白金、正白金或真白金。但这些称呼并不合理，并且容易与白色金混淆。它的符号是Pt，银灰白色，比重21.35，熔点1700℃，摩氏硬度4 - 4.5度，化学性稳定，除王水以外不受酸硷腐蚀。纯铂比较柔软，加入钌、铑、钯等金属会增加其硬度。南美印地安人早在15世纪前就制作铂金首饰，欧洲人迟至19世纪中叶以後才开始采用，目前日本为铂的最大消费国。
