综合指数是将多种不能同度量现象的数值，分别改变为能同度量的数值，然后进行对比，表明事物综合变动的指标。是用两个综合总量指标对比的方法计算的指数。以产品产量指数为例，各种产品由于具有不同的使用价值和计量单位，不能直接相加，进行比较; 但各种产品可乘以各自相应的价格，即： 产量×价格=产值，而价值量是可以相加和进行对比的。这里的价格称为同度量因素。对于由两个或两个以上因素构成的总量指标，在计算总指数时，只变动其中一个因素，固定其他因素，由此计算出的总指数，即综合指数。物价总指数就是综合指数的一个典型例子。
