最简单、最基本的振动，即分子中所有原子以相同频率和相同位相在平衡位置附近所作的简谐振动。简正振动方式随分子中原子数增加而增加。一个由n个原子组成的分子有3n－6(直线型分子为3n－5)种简正振动。简正振动方式基本可分为两大类，一类是键长发生变化的伸缩振动，一类是键角发生变化的弯曲振动(或变形振动)。每个简正振动都有一个特征频率，对应于红外光谱上可能的一个吸收峰。由于选择定则、简并状态、仪器分辨率和检测范围等因素使得红外吸收峰的数目少于简正振动数。
