地形图上相邻等高线之间的高差称为等高距，也叫做等高线间隔，用h表示。在同一幅地形图上，等高线的等高距相同。等高线的间隔越小，越能详细地表示地面的变化情况；等高线间隔越大，图上表示地面的情况越简略；但是，当等高线间隔过小时，地形图上的等高线过于密集，将会影响图面的清晰度，而且测绘工作量会增大，花费时间也越长。在测绘地形图时，应按照实际情况，根据测图比例尺的大小和测区的地势陡缓来选择合适的等高距，该等高距称为基本等高距。
