因固有的或外来的微扰随时间增长而使处于平衡态的等离子体形状发生畸变或使其进入湍流态的物理过程或物理现象。在高温等离子体中，由于带电粒子间及其与电磁场间复杂的相互作用，使等离子体的固有微扰或外来微扰在一定条件下能迅速模式来称呼不稳定性。有时不同模式指不同的物理特性，如理想模、电阻模、静电模、电磁模等；有时，以不同的空间结构来区分不同的模，并用他们的傅里叶分解指数来做模的标记。等离子体不稳定性可分为宏观（又称磁流体）不稳定性及微观（粒子动力学）不稳定性两大类。
