种子活力是种子发芽和出苗率、幼苗生长的潜势、植株抗逆能力和生产潜力的总和，是种子品质的重要指标。长期以来都用发芽试验检验种子的质量，生产实践表明，实验室的发芽率与田间的出苗率之间往往存在很大差距。 遗传性决定种子活力强度的可能性，发育程度决定活力程度表现的现实性,贮藏条件则决定种子活力下降的速度。由于种子活力是一项综合性指标，因此靠单一活力测定指标判定其总活力水平或健壮度是不科学的。
