神经元胞质（胞浆)的延长部分称为“神经纤维”，也叫“突起”。神经纤维的粗细各异，直径约在十分之几微米（1微米等于1/1000毫米)至100微米之间。有的很短，只有几微米；有的很长，可达1米左右。外有绝缘性髓鞘包着的，叫有髓鞘纤维；没有明显髓鞘的，叫无髓鞘纤维。纤维内充满半流动性的神经浆，浆内有微管、微丝、线粒体、内质网等，具有维持突起生长和运输的作用。许多平行的神经纤维集合成束，即是神经。
