社会分工，是超越一个经济单位的社会范围的生产分工，包括社会生产分为农业、工业等部门的一般分工；以及把这些大的部门再分为重工业、轻工业、种植业、畜牧业等产业或行业的特殊分工。分工为群居动物所特有。在早期的人类历史上，有三次社会大分工。(1) 原始社会后期发生的畜牧业同农业的分离。原始人类征服自然的能力有了提高，促进了劳动生产率的增长，引起了部落间的产品交换，为私有制的产生创造了物质前提。(2) 原始社会末期，因金属工具的使用和改良引起的手工业同农业的分离。使商品生产得到迅速发展，以手工业为中心的城市开始出现，除了自由人和奴隶之间的差别外，又出现了富人和穷人的差别。(3) 奴隶社会初期出现的专门经营商品买卖的商人。它促进了奴隶制的巩固和发展，开始积累了商业资本，脑力劳动开始从体力劳动中分离出来。
