硬盘的每一个盘片都有上下两面，一般每个盘面都可以利用，即都装上磁头，涂抹磁介质，可以存储数据，均为有效盘片，但有个别硬盘的盘面数为单数。这样的有效的盘面数为磁面。每个磁面都有一个编号，按顺序从上而下自“0”开始依次编号。在硬盘系统中，由于每一个磁面对应一个磁头，所以磁面号也是磁头号。通常硬盘有2~3个磁面，故磁面号为0~1或0~2.
